Ashley and the Special Olympics

Last weekend our family went to the Special Olympics with Ashley. She has been participating in Special Olympics track; this was her second and final meet for the year. Although I believe it is a good thing for her, she absolutely hates it. When Jason took her to practice one day, he came home and asked, “Why exactly are we punishing her?” I’m pretty sure it is the heat she hates more than the running, jumping, and throwing, but it is hard to tell. There are many things in Ashley’s life that she has started out hating, but eventually she grows to enjoy. As her parents we have the tough decision of trying to balance what do we accept that she does hate and let go, and what do we force her to do because it is good for her. I think the Special Olympics is a wonderful program. There are so many people out there trying really hard and just very excited to participate. It was pretty well organized and this was a state event, so there were extra activities, games, etc. for the entire family. They provided free lunch for all family members. There are so many coaches and volunteers, who sacrificed their time and energy to help the participants. Ashley is blessed to have a wonderful coach, who is so dedicated to and passionate about her team. She is also Ashley’s adaptive P.E. teacher and is well known in the community for her love and compassion towards her students. She makes them work hard, but always has their best interest at heart. I’m not sure if Ashley appreciates this as much as Jason and I do. Although Ashley threw tantrums, kicked, hit, and bit people around her throughout most of the track meet and pretty much refused to participate, we will continue to encourage her in this direction for now. Because I do believe it is good for her to exercise and participate in competition. We were, however, relieved when it was over this weekend. Originally posted June 2011
