Watching Rain Man

I watched the movie “Rain Man “the other day. Of course, I had seen it many years ago when it first was popular. But I thought it would be interesting to see it again, now that I am a parent of a person with autism. It was definitely different seeing it from the perspective I have now. I picked up on a lot of autistic characteristics, which were irrelevant to me the first time I watched it. I also found it very sad, first that a child with autism would be institutionalized basically his whole life, and not get to know his family. And that even when his brother wanted to take custody of him, experts felt it was still better for him to be in an institution. I know that was the attitude in society many years ago, but I’m glad we are starting to move past that. We do not have any definite plans for Ashley; time will tell what will be best for her. But my one prayer is that she is always living in a place, where she will be loved and cherished as the unique person she is, within a family unit.
