Friends or Enemies

When Hailey and Josh were little, they were best buds. Only 22 months apart in age, they adored each other. They spent hours each day playing with each other. When one got in trouble, the other was always outraged at us for being mean to his/her sister/brother. As they have grown older they are less enamored with each other. On any given day, you can ask either one and they will say, “I hate my sister/brother.” And they fight constantly. But every so often we have a day like yesterday, and they decide to play together for hours, happily. I’m not sure what brings the change in attitude, but it takes me back to the preschool days when they were best friends, and gives me hope that one day in the future they will consistently love each other again. I know it is normal for siblings to fight, but it certainly doesn’t make it any less annoying when you’re the one listening to it. As someone who did not grow up with siblings in the house, I find it interesting that people can hate each other and love each other so fiercely at the same time. As much as they are supposed to hate each other, they will always protect each other from other people. Even more interesting is neither Hailey nor Josh ever fight with Ashley. It is just not as much fun when you don’t get a huge emotional reaction. Plus they are so protective of Ashley they could never turn on her.
