It is so easy to focus on the negative things we have to deal with as a result of Josh’s bipolar symptoms. I have written and spoke about the meltdowns, fighting; struggle in school, struggles within our family, his threats, and skewed perspective on life in general, but with the negative extreme also comes the positive extreme. Josh is never balanced; whatever mood he is in is INTENSE to say the least. So when he is happy or excited there is no one more fun to be around. Hailey never gets quite as upset as Josh, but she also never gets as excited. Josh has threatened me, attacked me, and said horrible things to me. Hailey doesn’t do any of that. But when he is at his best, he is so loving, compassionate, and empathetic more than any person I have ever met. One time I was sick, and Josh made me a card and attempted to take care of me. Hailey doesn’t do that either. My little boy wears his heart on his sleeve, and when he is hurt or angry, look out! But he will have your back when you are angry or hurt also. When the holiday season comes around he is bursting with excitement. Giving him a present is so much fun, and he is truly grateful and excited about everything he gets. As much as the moodiness and anger drives me crazy, I truly love to see the exuberant and happy child within him!
