I know it is very controversial, but I’m certain that Ashley’s autism was brought on by vaccines. I’ve heard all the arguments for and against, and have made an informed decision. Ashley’s development was on track, and she was ahead on most of her milestones. Then she got the DTaP vaccine right before she turned 2 years old. Within days of the shot, she lost her ability to speak and look at us, along with other regression. Months later she was starting to make gains, and we did another shot, then she went even further downhill. Maybe I’m wrong, but we had a strong enough case that we had a medical exemption on vaccines for all 3 of our children for many years. Now this does not mean that I am against vaccines. I just think parents should think about them, and if you have a history of allergies in the family or if your child has shown any reaction, maybe you should spread them out or put them off for a while. We all have to make our own decisions for our children, please don’t judge the decision I made. We have questioned this decision many times, and felt there was no clear right answer. If we vaccinate we could damage our children, if we don’t, they could get seriously ill or die. We even started vaccines on Hailey and Josh, and then stopped them. We were actually told to stop Hailey’s because of her significant allergies. So other than tetanus shots, when they each had injuries, we have not done any vaccines in years. This brings us to the recent decision we had to make. Our doctor has decided that they are probably old enough to slowly get caught up on the vaccines, but left the decision to us. After much research we decided it is time, and they are possibly at more risk not being vaccinated at this age. After lots of talking to the health department, we came up with a plan to slowly get them caught up on shots. A few weeks ago, on a Friday afternoon, I took all 3 in for the first round. Hailey got the Hepatitis B, Ashley and Josh got DTaP (we wanted to confront our fear first). Hailey did fine, no reaction. Ashley woke up the next morning with a significant bruise and lump (still there 3 weeks later), and unable to use a fork. We actually saw significant regression for about a week in a lot of areas, but she seems to be getting it all back now. Josh complained about not feeling well all weekend, but initially we did not see any other issues with him. Then his teacher called to say he had regressed in his schoolwork quite a bit. She could not figure out what was going on with him; she said he was like a completely different child, just since the vaccine. So my thoughts – how do I blame their regression on vaccines, but then again, how do I not blame the vaccine? And what do I do from here? I talked to the pediatrician, they suggest going even slower, maybe even put it off for a while longer, and never doing DTaP again, just do DT. I don’t know what I’m going to do yet. It is just so scary for me. I am open to suggestions.
